Rowan University Profs Football
Exclusive broadcast coverage of Rowan University Profs Football by the WGLS-FM Sports Department.
Morrisville
is 0-5 thus far against NJAC opponents in the Mustangs first season
in the league. They’ve lost to Cortland, Montclair, TCNJ,
Western Connecticut, and William Paterson. Morrisville has been
outscored by an average of 15 point per game. The roster includes
55 freshman, 25 sophomores, five juniors, and seven seniors. There
are 12 starters combined of both sides of the ball. This contest
screams out one thing for the Profs… TRAP GAME.
Lately there
are many trap games of note in college and the NFL in which the
favorite got trapped: 9/25 USC vs. Oregon State, 10/12 Rams vs.
Redskins, 10/13 NY Giants vs. Cleveland. Rowan needs to take care
of business on Saturday.
The Mustangs
have good special teams and are third in the NJAC in punt returns
(12.5) and fourth in kickoff returns (22.6). Cornerback Dale Ross
leads the NJAC
in kickoff returns (29.6).
Morrisville
quarterback Billy Poling leads the conference in passing (249.3)
and total offense (291.0), however he is supposed to be out due
to injury. Kris Childs is supposed to replace Poling. Childs has
thrown for 212 yards and two touchdowns on 17 receptions. The
big playmakers are wide receivers Eddie Hull and Wendell Williams.
Hull has 36 receptions for 496 yards and two touchdowns, while
Williams adds 14 receptions for 365 yards and three touchdowns.
Profs must
keep Hull and Williams from making too many big plays and quick
scores. Rowan’s defense keeps getting better each week,
look for that to continue on Saturday. Expect Wilczynski to continue
finding more uses for his offensive weapons. It is apparent that
he can spread the field, find a target among many targets, and
use his legs when necessary. I am excited to see this Profs team
for the first time in 2008. See you there.
At the start
it looked like this game would be in a shootout with Western Connecticut.
The Profs took the opening drive 80 yards for a touchdown on a
6-play drive ending in a Frank Wilczynski 25-yard touchdown run.
Ryan Leafey contributed a 25-yard run on the drive. The Colonials
took the next drive 78 yards on a 9-play drive ending in running
back Wayne Neal hauling in a 5-yard pass from quarterback James
Williams. The point after attempt failed leaving Rowan with the
lead 7-6. The thumping of West Conn began in earnest as the Profs
rolled up 35 unanswered points through the beginning of the fourth
quarter, leading 42-6.
The Colonials
managed to punch in two more touchdowns, and also missed both
extra points against Rowan 2nd team defense. Strong safety/kick
returner Steve Wall added one more score on a 75-yard kickoff
return sandwiched in between West Conn’s two fourth quarter
scores capping a 49-18 win for the Profs.
Frank Wilczynski
threw three touchdowns and ran for another. Wilczynski completed
14 of 18 passes for 228 yards. He also carried the ball seven
times for 61 yards. Superbacks Ryan Leafey and Stephen Hevalow
contributed with 61 and 59 yards rushing respectively. Leafey
added a six-yard touchdown run. Wide receiver Marcus Lee totaled
40 yards and one touchdown on three catches. Wideout Mark Lisa
had 65 yards and one TD on two receptions. Wide receiver Anthony
Barone recorded a 31-yard touchdown grab.
The Rowan did
its job by holding quarterback James Williams to 177 yards passing
while grabbing two interceptions and forcing one fumble. The Profs
are ranked sixth in the nation in turnover margin at +2.0 (14
gained / 4 lost) per game and ninth in sacks with 4 (20 total)
per game
Linebacker
Kevin Taylor registered seven tackles. Defensive end Matt Hoffman
and nose guard Justin Hinds each had six stops. Hoffman, fellow
defensive end Kyle Kane and linebacker Moe Ghotok each had a sack.
Safeties Jimmy DiPaolo and Rocky Aliberti both had one interception.
Linebacker Lafayette Crawford recovered a fumble.
Rowan hosts
first year NJAC opponent SUNY Morrisville (0-5) for homecoming
on Saturday, October 18 at 2 p.m.
Rowan (3-1)
host Western Connecticut (2-2) this Saturday at 1 pm. The Profs
lead the series 6-0.
Last Saturday,
Western Connecticut State beat Morrisville State, 40-6 in Morrisville,
NY. Quarterback James Williams threw for 257 and three touchdowns,
completing 20 of 31 pass attempts. Tailback Jason Santiago carried
the ball 16 times for 80 yards and one touchdown. He also had
an 11-yard touchdown grab. Wide receiver Keith Rosedom made four
catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. Wideout Chris Kelly contributed
with three receptions for 51 yards and one TD.
Williams has
stepped up as the Colonials’ leader. In four games, the
third year starter has thrown for 1,092 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Williams completed 86 of 138 passes and has only tossed four interceptions
this season. He is averaging 273.0 passing yards per game and
has a 62.3 completion percentage. Williams leads the NJAC in passing
(273.0). He is second in total offense
(285.0) and third in pass efficiency (151.7).
Western Connecticut
State packs a lethal one-two punch at tailback. Santiago is the
team leader with 143 yards and one touchdown on 40 rushes. He
has 50 yards receiving and one TD on three catches. Wayne Neal
has rushed for 117 yards and one touchdown on 46 carries.
Rowan leads
the NJAC in kickoff returns (25.5) and sacks (17). The Profs are
tied for first in turnover margin (+1.75), second in rush defense
(73.5) and third in scoring defense (21.2), rushing offense (165.5),
pass efficiency (153.6), pass efficiency defense (117.6), interceptions
(5) and punting (33.7).
The Colonials
rank first in the conference in passing offense (280.5). They
are second in total defense (292.2), third in pass defense (188.8)
and fourth in pass efficiency (143.3) and total offense (357.8).
WestConn is fifth in scoring (28.8) and rush defense (103.5),
tied for fifth in scoring defense (24.8) and sacks (9) and sixth
in pass efficiency defense (137.1).
The Profs need
to keep up their league leading pressure on the quarterback. Disrupting
the Colonials passing game is the key to victory tomorrow. Big
plays are a killer. Rowan improved defending the big play last
week, and they must continue improving in the secondary. Profs
will win if they can keep West Conn at 250 yards or less of passing
offense.
Quarterback
Frank Wilczynski threw for four touchdowns and rushed for 133
on 18 carries as Rowan beat Brockport 37-20. He threw for 296
yards and completed 22 passes to eight different receivers. Kicker
Mark Getsinger was 3-for-3 in field goal attempts of 19, 22, and
28 yards. Superback Ryan Leafey caught seven passes for 66 yards.
Davon Edwards grabbed five passes for 59 yards, Marcus Lee added
three catches for 56 yards.
The Profs’
defense was led by defensive end Kyle Kane with 12 tackles, three
tackles for a loss, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one
sack. Safety Mike Barone compiled eight tackles and one fumble
recovery. Linebacker Drew Yezzi registered five tackles, one tackle
for a loss (-1 yard), one pass breakup and one fumble recovery.
Rowan travels
to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles this Saturday. The Profs
lead the series 4-1. In 2005, Rowan beat Brockport 22-0. The Profs
last loss to the Golden Eagles was in 2002 in the first round
of the playoffs 15-12. This is Brockport’s first year in
the NJAC, and is 1-2, beating William Paterson and losing to both
Frostburg St. and Montclair St.
In three games
the Golden Eagles have put up 1,059 yards almost a 50-50 split
of run and pass. Running back Garet Lynch leads the team with
426 yards and two touchdowns on 91 carries. Quarterback Zack Luke
has thrown for 577 yards and three touchdowns. He has spread the
wealth to six different receivers. Felipe Diaz, Hector Rosas and
Matt Newman are the leading receivers with a combined 37 receptions,
402 yards, and two touchdowns.
The linebacking
corps leads the Golden Eagle defense. Jarrett Woodfork has 26
tackles. He is currently tied for fifth in the conference with
8.7 tackles per game. Nick Duchscherer follows with 20 stops.
He also has three pass breakups and one fumble recovery. Linebacker
Garrett Axtell has compiled 19 tackles, one TFL and one blocked
kick, while linebacker Cevon Carver has posted 16 tackles, two
TFL and one pass breakup.
Rowan leads
the conference in sacks (14), kickoff returns (26.7) and punting
(35.8). The Profs are second in rushing defense (72.3) and pass
defense efficiency (120.1), third in turnover margin (1.33), fourth
in scoring offense (27.7), scoring defense (21.7) and rushing
offense (156.3) and fifth in punt returns (7.3). The Profs are
tied for fourth in total defense (337.7).
The College
at Brockport is ranked third in the NJAC in scoring defense (21.0)
and first downs (62). The Golden Eagles are fifth in pass defense
(225.7), rushing offense (154.7) and pass defense efficiency (129.0).
The Profs are
still having problems giving up big pass plays. While Rowan leads
the league in sacks, too many receivers are wide open. The Profs
defensive backs need to stay with their receivers just a little
longer and or break up passes. No more gimmies in the NJAC. If
Rowan continues improving, they should win on Saturday. It looks
like Frank Wilczynski and crew are starting to click.
