Looking to Roll at Kean

This is the 33rd
meeting between Rowan University and Kean University. The Profs
lead the series, 28-4 and have won nine straight games. Last year
at home, Rowan won 32-19 over Kean. The Cougars' last victory
against Rowan was in 1994, 19-16 in Union.
At home, Rowan defeated
Kean, 32-19. Quarterback Mike Orihel totaled 186 yards passing
and three touchdowns. He made 22 completions in 31 attempts and
also scored with a one yard run. Phil Silva led the receivers
with five catches for 42 yards and one TD catch of seven yards.
The Profs scored on their first four drives and led 25-0 after
the first quarter. In the second, Kean's Jairus Kendle had a 23-yard
fumble return for a touchdown. The Profs were up 25-7 at the half.
The Cougars had a 44-yard TD pass from Mike Dugan to Jarred Crowley
in the fourth. Pat Thompson scored Rowan's final touchdown with
a 21-yard reception from Jabrill Joseph. Dugan threw a five yard
TD pass to Edwin Page.
Kean was shutout
by host Salisbury, 44-0. The Sea Gulls are undefeated with a 7-0
record and are ranked ninth in the nation. Jasonus Tillery led
the Cougar receivers with four catches for 67 yards. Quarterback
A.J. Roque made eight completions in 24 attempts for 96 yards.
The Salisbury defense held Kean to 11 yards rushing. Linebacker
Steve Skakum led the Cougars' defense with 11 tackles. Ryan Staton
and Dan D'Anvanzo each recorded an interception while Mike Watkins
recovered a fumble.
Roque earned the
starting position at quarterback in his rookie season. He is averaging
219.6 yards passing per game. His top receiver Tillery (97.1 ypg)
is the team's scoring leader with 30 points. Tolu Adeyemi and
Jarred Crowley are contributing with 19.6 and 12.5 yards per catch
respectively.
Skakum is second
in the NJAC with 7.0 tackles per game and 1.29 tackles for a loss.
Jon Robinson has
kicked eight extra points (10 attempts) and five field goals (seven
attempts). His longest field goal is 37 yards. Roque also handles
the punting duties, he has four punts blocked this season. George
Williams is averaging 19.5 yards on kick returns.
Mike Orihel continues
to lead the conference in pass efficiency (146.2) but dropped
to second in passing (308.8) and total offense (307.8). Phil Silva
is third in the NJAC and averaging 5.0 receptions per game. In
the last game, Tyree Jackson had two TD catches his first scores
of the season. Wide receiver Sakeen Wright is first on the team
in scoring with five touchdowns for 30 points. He is averaging
13.6 yards per catch. Pat Thompson is third in the conference
with 95.7 yards rushing per game. In the conference team stats,
Rowan is second in scoring offense (29.8), pass offense (287.3),
total offense (403.8) and pass efficiency (141.0). The Profs are
also third in rushing (116.5).
Mike Seidenberg
has been a major factor on the defense since he was switched from
tight end to linebacker. He is tied for second in tackles (38)
and has recorded one sack, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery.
The tackle leader Mike McClain also leads the team with three
fumble recoveries for first in the conference. The sack leader
is Brian Bond with six for a loss of 33 yards. His average of
0.92 sacks per game is tied for first in the NJAC. Linebacker
Randy Tosh has added three sacks (-23), one interception and one
fumble recovery.
Shaddow has totaled
25 points which is second. He continues to be perfect with 19
extra points (19 attempts) and two field goals (two attempts).
Shaddow has a streak of 26 straight PATs (seven at the end of
last season) and is two away from tying the school record by Nick
Frade (2001). Andrew Smith has taken over the punting duties (33.2
avg.) the last two games.
The Cougars gave
up 456 yards rushing to Salisbury last week. Kean is giving up
an average of 141 yards per game against the other six opponents
they've played. They've also given up and 220.7 yards passing
per game.
In the NJAC, Kean
is last in scoring offense, scoring defense, rushing offense and
rushing defense. The Cougars have given up 41 total sacks, the
most in the NJAC. The Profs are second in scoring offense, passing
offense, and total offense in the league. Rowan is third in sacks
allowed with 10.
As Phil Silva said,
"Every NJAC game is a championship game." The level
of competition to-date for each team is heavily skewed towards
the Profs. Rowan should take care of business early and often
and hopefully be able to pull starters in the second-half. See
