This is a little more like it. The Profs scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions racing out to a 41-6 halftime lead. Rowan exploded for 632 yards on offense while limiting the Pioneers to 156 yards of offense. I know its William Paterson but I think Rowan was due to unload on somebody. Hopefully it continues next week and they pound Montclair. No use letting the Red Hawks hang around like last year. Number one seed on the East region, home field advantage, and first round bye hangs on the outcome next week.

"We put them away early, and they [Pioneers] knew they weren't coming back. We put a full game together and we're happy with that." said linebacker Mike McClain.

"Given what happened last year, we'll be ready for Montclair [next week]," he added.

It was Senior day this past Saturday, as each Prof senior was announced and met by their family members for pictures on the field. Except for a little wind and a sunny high sky (makes picture taking more difficult), it was a great day for football.

Quarterback Mike Orihel passed for 252 yards with three touchdowns and he ran for two more to lead Rowan University over conference opponent William Paterson, 61-6 at home on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Rowan (7-2) clinched the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship. Rowan is undefeated in the conference with a 5-0 mark. The Profs have 14 conference titles with the last one coming in 2002. Rowan receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament that starts on Saturday, November 20.

Orhiel made 10 of 12 completions and his touchdowns passes were 62, 41 and 57 yards. He also scored with four and one yard runs. The Profs had 137 yards receiving on four catches from Sakeen Wright and two touchdowns. Pat Thompson carried the ball 24 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns, he now leads the NJAC in rushing with 974 yards. Backup quarterback Joe Rankin had one touchdown passing and one rushing.

For William Paterson, Cristobal Rodriguez made 10 completions in 26 attempts for 68 yards passing. The Pioneers' lone touchdown was an 83-yard kick return by Prince Breeden. David Packard and Kareen Moon each had three receptions for 21 yards.

The Profs' defense held the Pioneers to 58 yards rushing and 98 yards passing. End Brian Bond totaled six tackles. Linebacker Mike Seidenberg and safety Jabrill Joseph each recorded an interception while linebacker Aaron McCord and cornerback Zakee Babb both recovered a fumble.

The Pioneers had nine tackles from linebacker Donald Dougherty. Defensive back Andy Howell and nose tackle Ricky Vesce contributed with eight and seven tackles respectively.

In the first quarter, Rowan scored three straight touchdowns to lead 20-0. The first touchdown came on the first play, a 62-yard pass from Orihel to Wright, at 14:40. The Profs' second drive ended with a four-yard touchdown run by Orihel (12:18). The drive took six plays and covered 35 yards. Thompson carried the ball five times in the drive for 31 yards. Rowan's third touchdown came on its third drive that took seven plays, 93 yards. Orihel completed a 41-yard pass to Wright. On the kickoff, Breeden scored with an 83-yard return (8:02). Thompson ended the first quarter scoring with a five yard TD run (3:30).

The Profs scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 48-6 at the half. Orihel completed a 57-yard touchdown pass to Tyree Jackson at 14:34. With eight minutes left, Orihel had a one-yard carry for a TD and Thompson scored with a 62 yard run. In the fourth, Rankin completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Brad Stys (10:56) and Rankin scored with a three-yard run (1:52).

This is the 34th meeting between Rowan University and William Paterson University. The Profs have won nine straight games against the Pioneers and lead the series, 28-5. Last year, Rowan won at William Paterson, 27-12. At home in 2002, Rowan defeated WPU, 70-7. William Paterson's last win over Rowan was in 1994, 18-14 in Glassboro.

In Wayne, Rowan defeated William Paterson, 27-12. The Profs scored three straight touchdowns before the Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. Brandon Medine had the first touchdown with a three yard fumble return. Pat Thompson scored with a 17-yard touchdown run. He totaled 70 yards on 14 carries. Mike Seidenberg completed a four-yard TD pass to Phil Silva. Rowan had a 20-6 advantage after three quarters. In the fourth, Thomas Murphy had a three-yard carry for a Pioneer touchdown. Seidenberg had the Profs' final TD with a 14 yard carry. William Paterson scored with a one yard run by Evan Quinn.

At home, Mount Ida had a 34-27 win over William Paterson. With 23 seconds remaining, Mount Ida scored with a nine yard touchdown pass. Scott Moore scored on a blocked punt return and Brian Kalendek kicked the extra point to put the Pioneers up 27-26 with 2:41 left. William Paterson also had two touchdown runs by Prince Breeden of three and one yard. Jamal Henderson scored with a 23-yard fumble return. Breeden finished the game with 77 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Cristobal Rodriguez threw for 211 yards with 16 completions on 29 attempts. Kareen Moon led the receivers with five catches for 101 yards.

This is Rodriguez's first season directing the Pioneers' offense. He is fourth in the conference with 191.4 yards per game. Thomas Murphy returns to the backfield where he is averaging 3.8 yards per carry. An All-Conference second team selection, Murphy also has a 12.1 average per catch.

The Pioneers are led on defense by nose guard Ricky Vesce. He has recorded five sacks (-32), 14 tackles for a loss (-43), forced two fumbles and recovered one. Linebacker Kyle Harkins has contributed with 10 tackles for a loss (-33). End Mark Zirkel was the team's Most Valuable Player last season. Defensive back Kevin Kohan and safety Todd Gorski have recorded three and two interceptions respectively. Linebacker Andy Howell and cornerback Tom Larsen earned All-NJAC second team last year.

This is the second season for Kalendek and Robert Larsen handing the kicking and punting duties respectively. Kalendek has 22 points with 16 extra points and two field goals. Breeden has taken 20 kick returns for 416 yards (20.8) and scored one TD. Tom Larsen is averaging 15.3 yards on kick returns and 15.5 on punt returns.

Orihel continues to dominate in the conference. He is the NJAC leader in passing average (308.6), total offense (306.9) and pass efficiency (148.4). In the NCAA stats, Orihel is ranked ninth in total offense and 22nd in pass efficiency. Wright has nine touchdowns receiving for 54 points that is first on the team. Phil Silva and Dustin Katcher are averaging 12.2 and 12.5 yards per reception. Thompson is second in the conference with 95.8 yards per game. In the conference team stats, Rowan is first in scoring offense (30.2), total offense (409.2) and pass efficiency (144.3). The Profs are also ranked second in pass offense (292.5) and third in rushing (116.8).

In addition to leading the team in tackles, Tosh has recovered two fumbles, has one interception and four sacks (-32). Linebacker Mike McClain has three fumble recoveries and is tied for first in the conference. End Brian Bond is the team's sack leader with eight for a loss of 41 yards. The Profs have forced 18 turnovers, seven interceptions and 11 fumbles.

Kicker Damian Shaddow has compiled 25 points with 19 PATs (23 attempts) and two field goals (three attempts). Andrew Smith is averaging 33.2 yards per punt.

William Paterson has already doubled their win total over 2003 win two wins. The Pioneers have increased scoring on offense to 18.8 points per game this year over 11.2 ppg in 2003.

Since getting blanked 35-0 by Delaware Valley in week one, William Paterson has been in every game this year. Play making ability has improved behind QB Rodriquez who has respectable numbers (116 completions, 241 attempts, 1531 yards, 10 TD's). He is susceptible to interceptions having thrown 13 in eight games. The Pioneer offensive line has given up 26 sacks.

As long as the Profs avoid giving up the big play and having unforced errors ala Kean, this one should be relatively easy. The NJAC trophy will come back home to the Boro.
