Except for a little chill in the air it was a perfect day for homecoming. Former head football coach and Rowan Hall of Famer Richard "The Bear" Wacker was honored with a plaque for his leadership in resurrecting the Glassboro State/Rowan football program in the mid 1960's.

The football program stopped fielding a team during the Korean war. Coach Wacker started the program again from scratch by borrowing equipment and clearing a place for a football field.

He eventually turned the program into a winner with six NJAC titles (four outright) in the 1970's, including four straight from 1974-77. Wacker is also the founder of the Brown & Gold Gridiron club that brings together football alumni for events and football games.

On hand for the ceremony were players from those teams of the 1970's. The plaque will be placed at the entrance of the fieldhouse.

On offense Matias Spahn drilled three field goals of 35, 31, 22 yards and one extra point. Dustin Katcher had one touchdown reception and Ulysses Encarnacion added a 2-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring at 22-0. Quarterback Joe Rankin was 26 of 43 for 244 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

Defensive end Keith Heimerl led the team with nine tackles. He also posted two sacks and one forced fumble. Linebacker Zach Garren made seven stops and had one interception and two pass deflections. Linebacker Todd Trout also had seven tackles, including one sack. Safety Eric Bailey made six tackles, recovered one fumble, and had two interceptions and three pass deflections. Tackle Nick Tarasevich had one interception and two sacks, while cornerback Zakee Babb also had a pick.

“We lost (defensive end) Brian Bond and we had to move some things around. The defense hung in and they worked together. (Middle linebacker) Randy Tosh played some end, [outside linebacker] Zach Garren was moved to middle linebacker, and Todd Trout moved from weak to strongside linebacker,” said head coach Jay Accorsi.

“We rotated some new guys in like Chris Pinto and they had an impact,” added Accorsi.

“We moved some guys around and seemed to work out well. We practiced really hard on stunts during the week, and we played together as a team,” said Todd Trout.

The Golden Eagles are coming into Saturday with a 3-4 record. They are a little hard to figure out as a team. Brockport lost to Cortland 20-10 and lost to No. 17 Salisbury 35-30. Montclair beat Salisbury 31-27. Huh?

Let's try that again. Last week, Brockport pounded previously ranked No.22 Wesley 47-0, but got beat by No. 16 Ithaca 42-17. Ithaca lost to (3-4) Lycoming 33-30. Lycoming had previously gotten beat by Wilkes 17-14. William Paterson beat Wilkes 21-17 in week one. Hmmm.

I guess the best thing to do is expect the best Brockport team to show up. Opponents usually play better against the Profs.

Freshman quarterback Zack Luke threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns as the Golden Eagles stunned Wesley College, 47-0, in an Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) game Saturday in Brockport.

Wesley (7-1 overall, 3-1 ACFC) came into the game as the 22nd ranked team in NCAA Division III and were held to minus 3 yards rushing and just 87 yards through the air. Running back Brian Wise had 96 yards rushing, 51 yards receiving and 49 yards on returns for 196 all-purpose yards.

The Golden Eagles average 221 yards passing and 114 yards rushing per game. They average 21.6 points per game. On defense Brockport allows 302 yards, 140 yards rushing, and 20.9 points per game.

Rowan is averaging 287 yards passing and 175.7 yards rushing. They average 32.3 points per game. On defense the Profs allow 259 yards per game, 76 yards rushing, and 32.3 points per game.

For what it is worth, the Golden Eagles have played more ranked and previously ranked teams (Ithaca, St. John Fisher, and Wesley) then the Profs (Christpoher Newport).

Brockport is allowing three sacks per game while the Rowan defense is averaging four sacks per game.

Execution is going to be the key to this game. The Profs must score in the redzone and minimize mistakes. Against Kean, Rowan gave the Cougars to many cheap scoring opportunities, while not finishing drives deep in enemy territory. Rowan must force Brockport to drive the length of the field for points.

Mount Union lost its first regular season game in almost 11 years. Hardin-Simmons in Texas also lost this past Saturday. Rowan is in the driver's seat for the top seed in the East region playoff bracket. Now it is also likely that the Profs will not have to travel should they win the East region. Keep winning and Rowan has homefield advantage until the Stagg Bowl.

Playoffs begin on this Saturday, one game at a time. Are you ready? See you on Saturday.
