Before the Montclair game this past Saturday the vibe was completely different from the William Paterson. A few of the Prof seniors were pumping up the rest of the team. During warmups one could hear the players say, "Not In Our House!… Not Today!"

There was a certain buzz I feel before big games that was missing in Wayne, NJ the week before. I like my Profs angry… with a little chip on their shoulders.

Early on Montclair was executing the running game with Ryan McCoach who finished with 64 yards on 27 carries. The Red Hawks also were completing short passes.

Montclair scored the first touchdown after a Rowan punt midway through the first quarter. The punt actually touched a Red Hawk player and was recovered by the Profs. Not only could you see the ball skim the Montclair player, but you could hear it hit his shoulder pads. Unfortunately, the ref covering the play missed the call.

In the second quarter, the Rowan defense started shutting down the running game. The Prof offense kicked into gear with an 11 play 83-yard drive. Joe Rankin completed 6-of-7 passes during the drive for 72 yards. Nadyr Albri ran it from the four-yard line. Rowan scored again on their next possession when Sakeen Wright hauled in an eight yard touchdown pass to put the Profs up 14-7. The drive started on the Montclair 40-yard line. Jim Miglore returned a Red Hawk punt 15 yards to begin the drive.

The Profs added two more touchdowns and a field goal in the third quarter. Joe D'Imperio hit Phil Silva with a 27-yard touchdown pass on a fake end around at 12:41. Matias Spahn kicked a 31-yard field goal with 9:22 left and tight end Brian Jenkins grabbed a 17-yard touchdown pass from Rankin to complete the Rowan scoring.

MSU had one final touchdown in the fourth quarter to close the scoring at 31-14.

The Prof defense dominated Montclair ringing up 11 sacks, and three turnovers. Rowan allowed only 5 total yards of net rushing. Randy Tosh led the defense with 15 tackles and 5 sacks. Keith Heimerl added 10 tackles and a sack. Zach Garren contributed 9 tackles and a sack. Safety Brandon Tolbert and linebacker Todd Trout had 8 tackles and a sack each. Tolbert also forced a fumble and Trout had an interception. Cornerback Dawaine Whetstone also had an interception, while linebacker Robert Niszczak recovered a fumble.

Everything on the Line Against Red Hawks

There's usually a playoff atmosphere when Montclair and Rowan tangle on the last game of the season. Profs are coming off their worst loss in years against William Paterson 21-20. In doing so, Rowan has lost an opportunity for a Pool C at-large bid, and also ruined the Red Hawks opportunity for the NJAC title and a Pool A bid. The Profs must beat Montclair and win the NJAC title in order to make the playoffs.

The best that Montclair can do is beat Rowan, knock the Profs from the NJAC title and the playoffs. Cortland owns the tie breaker over the Red Hawks. The Red Dragons will take the NJAC and Pool A, and the Red Hawks will have to hope for an ECAC bid. Which is a consolation tournament like the NIT. Rowan doesn't elect to participate, it's the NCAA's or bust.

MSU quarterback Eric Ferriol has thrown for 1,288 yards, completing 95 of 184 passes for 10 touchdowns. Last year he was NJAC second team honors last season at wide receiver. Kicker Vin Duffont leads the team with 47 points, 17 PAT's and 10 field goals. Freshman Ryan McCoach leads the NJAC in all purpose yards with 130.2 yards per game and has rushed for 616 yards this year.

The Red Hawk's have improved offensively during the season. Defense has been their strong suit this year, with many returning starters. Montclair has given up 18.4 points per game.

The Profs have played well on defense all year. They are second in total defense in the NJAC and 5th in the nation for rushing defense.

Execution and field position is the key to this game. Make the Red Hawks earn their points by driving the length of the field. Rowan outgained William Paterson by a 4-1 margin, but the six turnovers did the Profs in. Montclair is coming down to Glassboro. Profs play well when they are mad, and they should be mad. A win keeps the Rowan season going. They'll wind up at least a 4th seed in the East and possibly higher if Ithaca or Delaware Valley loses.

Last week, the Pioneers goal was to play their best, four seconds at the time. Each play is only four seconds long. It worked for them. Take it to Montclair every play and take care of business.
