Five touchdown passes, two rushing touchdowns, and 298 yards of passing for Mike Orihel as the Profs dominate Western Connecticut 49-3. Makes for a pretty good fantasy score. Actually it did count for a fantasy score of 47 points for me.

I can actually say that there is a crazier D3 football fan than me. The guy that created www.bridgewaterfootball.com thought it might be a neat idea to create a beta test D3 Fantasy Football league. Talk about an administrational headache. He invited what he called the D3 “gurus” of football to participate, mostly people that either write for or contribute to D3football.com.

Now I’m a “guru”… What if I come in last? Sheesh. I’m so competitive. Now I have one more thing to worry about.

We had a draft and everything and you can follow the fantasy league here. I traded up to get Orihel, but Sakeen was gone before I had a chance to get him. Picked up Phil Silva as a free agent last week. I’m hoping Phil will start getting hot. I need the points.

Come on Phil, help a brother out. What if the guy from Linfield beats me?

Ulysses Encarnacion (104 yards) and Rob Richardson (90 yards) combined for 194 yards rushing. Sakeen Wright caught 6 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Brad Stys, Dustin Katcher, and Phil Silva each scored a touchdown.

Rowan rolled up 541 yards of total offense. The defense only allowed 178 yards of total offense with three total yards rushing. In two games the defense has only allowed 10 points.

Perhaps the only negative was penalties 16 for 184 yards. If Profs can start paring down the penalties, things will be looking very good. The defense appears a lot more focused on each individual play, and the offense is rolling with an improved running game. Ulysses leads the conference in rushing and has a 7.5 yards per carry average. Rob Richardson has a 6.9 yards per carry average. That’s big time chain moving stuff right there folks.

I’ll have to miss the Robert Morris game this week, but will be back in person for the College of New Jersey game.

Last year in Danbury, Rowan had a 43-7 win over Western Connecticut. The Profs forced four turnovers, one interception and three fumbles. Mike Orihel totaled 241 yards passing (22 of 36) with three touchdowns. Pat Thompson rushed for 131 yards on nine attempts and scored with a nine-yard carry. The Rowan defense held Western Connecticut to 229 yards, five rushing and 224 passing. The Profs have won all three of their previous meetings against the Colonials.

For WestConn, Joe DiMeglio made 28 completions in 53 attempts for 224 yards. David Cournoyer had seven receptions for 86 yards and Vincent Sheperis followed with six catches for 34 yards. Jason Alcin recorded a game high 11 tackles.

This is Joe DiMeglio’s second season as the starting quarterback after transferring from the University of New Haven. Last year, DiMeglio passed for 2,836 yards and 16 touchdowns to earn All-Conference second team honors. His favorite targets are Vincent Sheperis and Adamis Gonzalez. Sheperis was selected to the All-Conference first team and Gonzalez made the second team. WCSU returns its leading rusher, Jason Adamson who compiled 696 yards on 179 attempts and scored 13 touchdowns. He was a NJAC All-Conference second team selection. Adamson splits the ground duties with veteran Rick Jackson. On the line, is All-Conference first teamer Steve Beecher at left tackle.

DiMeglio holds the school records for most attempts (game): 65 vs. Cortland (10-30-04), most attempts (season): 420 (2004), most completions (game): 34 vs. Cortland (10-30-04), most completions (season): 224 (2004) and passing yards (season): 2,836 (2004).

Sheperis also has his name in the record books. He has the marks for most catches (game):16 vs. The College of New Jersey (10-16-04), most catches (season): 74 (2003 and 2004);most catches (career): 188 (2002-present), most yards receiving (season): 1,061 (2003) and most yards receiving (career): 2,567 (2002-present). Adamis Gonzalez holds the school record for most yards receiving (game): 245 vs.William Paterson (9-25-04).

WestConn has switched to a 3-5-3 defense in order to put more of their faster and aggressive defenders on the field. This new look is meant to compete better against the wide-open offenses of the NJAC.

Hopefully Rowan can come out of the bye and start clicking from the outset on Saturday. The offense needs to improve upon week one in the red-zone and convert more chances. Profs should be able to run on this defense and move the chains. I think that there are too many weapons on offense for the Colonial defense to match up against. Rowan rolled up 600 yards of offense against CNU in week one. I’d expect the Profs to score more than 21 points against WestConn.

From a defensive standpoint, Rowan practices against one of the best spread offenses in the country. So Rowan should be familiar with West Conn’s spread offense. The Prof defense must stop the big play and not allow quick scores. First home game of the year and it looks like hurricane Ophelia might cause some showers on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll have sun during the game.
