The defense for
the Profs stepped up big for the second straight week, as offensive
turnovers kept pressure on the Rowan defense throughout the game.
Rowan had a punt blocked on their first offensive series. Wesley
was stopped in four downs just outside the red zone. Later the
Rowan defense partially blocked a field goal late in the first
quarter, which became the difference in the game.
It turned out to be big stop after big stop for the Prof defense,
in which a key interception or a tackle for a loss would end a
Wesley drive. The secondary held the Wolverines big play Sr. WR
Marques Cosby to 5 catches for 41 yards. Wesley Sr. QB Curtis
Long completed 16 of 38 passes for 179 and a TD. He had one interception
and was sacked twice.
Rowan led 16 - 0
at half. RB Creg Bethea, ran it in from 9 yards out at 14:25 of
the second quarter, to give the Prof a 7- 0. WR Phil Silva caught
at TD pass from Tony Racioppi to make the score 13 - 0, later
in the quarter. Nick Frade added a FG late in the first half.
Wesley concentrated
on the run in the second half. They rang up 136 yards, powered
by RB Fred Edwards (37carries, 245 yards and 2 TD's). The Wolverines
scored three TD's in the second half. The last TD made the score
22 - 20 late in the game. The two point conversion failed when
the Profs made the play of game, as DB Gabe Spitale, DE Gerrit
Tosh, and LB Domenic Tomeo combined to stuff Edwards.
